Freeman was one of the most popular men at Black Mesa, despite his quiet… that is, silent demeanor. Rather, he was just that damn dedicated to his job. It wasn’t that he was forced to stay late. The skin around his eyes was dark and drooping, likely a result of working long hours with few breaks. It was stiff, probably tense from stress. Barney straightened his back, taking another long sip of coffee as he examined Gordon’s posture. He was probably lost in thought about some elaborate theory or formula. Who knows what was going through the scientist’s mind as those dark green eyes intently scanned the architecture. Just a few rusted pipes and old vent shafts. Barney craned his head back in an attempt to stare at it as well, but he found nothing of interest. He looked to his right again, to where Gordon was standing, absently staring up at something on the ceiling. With a sigh, he leaned back against the chipped counter, his shoulders and neck crackling in a satisfying release of tension. He’d have to return to his shift in about ten minutes, and he was all out of discussion topics to spend that time on. It was refreshing to have someone to talk to who wouldn’t sass back with some quip or bad joke.īarney checked the digital clock on the face of the yellowed microwave in the corner of the break room. Then again, if Gordon had started going on about his shift in the Anomalous Materials lab, there would have probably only been a handful of words Barney would have understood, starting with “materials” and ending with “lab.” Not that it mattered he just greatly enjoyed Gordon’s company. Freeman always did feel rather… one-sided. Gordon Freeman gave him an amused smirk, but otherwise had no response for the security guard’s wild tale. A few noisy sips later, he continued his train of thought.
